The introduction of hydrogen (H2) in the energy matrix can be carried out by different strategies, apparently, simplest one would be to use pure hydrogen, while other options involve the use of ammonia as an energy carrier or to use hydrogen in mixtures with conventional fuels, which for simplicity are called hydrogen enriched fuels. For example, natural gas (NG), propane or liquified petroleum gas (LPG) could be enriched with hydrogen to decrease total greenhouse gas emissions. Nevertheless, this strategy brings some safety concerns related to the wide flammability limits and detonability limits of hydrogen. That is, a mixture involving hydrogen enriched fuels would be more prone to deflagration to detonation transition and more difficult to extinguish. The present seminar has the objective of presenting the results obtained over several experimental campaigns involving the extinction of premixed flames of hydrogen enriched fuels by using flame two types of arrester elements of simple geometries. The experiments were conducted at the Detonations and Explosions Laboratory (LDE) of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul to characterize the extinction of premixed flames of NG/H2/Air, CH4/H2/Air and C3H8/H2/Air mixtures through parallel plates and perforated plate flame arrester elements.
